THE SHORT ANSWER
For many first-time anglers, the 4-hour Nearshore Rockfish trip is a practical starting point. Choose the 2-hour LaPush Coastal Explorer for a shorter introduction, or the 5-hour rockfish-and-lingcod trip if your crew wants more fishing time. No fishing experience is required.

Start with the least comfortable person in your group
A great first outing is one your whole crew can enjoy. Before choosing a target species, think about the children’s ages, everyone’s comfort on boats and how much time they want to spend on the ocean. Tell Capt. Lamont whether your goal is learning something new, bringing fish home or simply sharing a day together. You do not need to know fishing terminology to explain what would make the trip worthwhile.
A shorter introduction: 2-hour LaPush Coastal Explorer
The 2-hour LaPush Coastal Explorer is an option for a group that wants a smaller time commitment. It is a private group outing, with space for up to six. A shorter trip can be easier to fit around children’s attention spans and other travel plans. It still takes place on the ocean, so shorter does not mean motion-free. Discuss the fishing plan and your group’s expectations before reserving.
More fishing time: 4-hour Nearshore Rockfish
Nearshore Rockfish gives beginners more time to practice using the gear without committing to a full-day outing. The trip is listed as 4 hours or limits, which means it may finish earlier when applicable catch limits are reached. Shared seats let one or two people request a place without organizing an entire boat. These departures need three total booked anglers across all parties to operate.
When the 5-hour trip makes sense
Choose Offshore/Ext. Nearshore Rockfish and Lingcod when lingcod is a priority and your group is comfortable with a longer ocean day. Beginners are welcome here too. The difference is the trip’s time and target species, not an experience test. If someone is unsure about the commitment, discuss the shorter options first. Catch is never guaranteed.
What you need to bring—and what you do not
KYS supplies rods, reels, tackle, bait and patient instruction. You do not need to buy a fishing setup for your first outing. Bring layers, rain protection, secure footwear, food and water, and follow the preparation instructions sent for your trip. The Safari has a heated cabin and private bathroom. Check current license requirements before departure; fish processing is an additional charge.
Choose your date after choosing your experience
Use Trips & Pricing to compare current rates, then check available dates. Include your group’s ages, fishing experience and expectations in the request. Capt. Lamont reviews requests and confirms the details. Early or later departure requests can be discussed, but the final timing depends on the trip, tides and weather.
